Reports reaching indicate that two of the injured persons in the ghastly accident at Yapei-Yipala in the Central Gonja District of the Northern Region have died on admission.

This brings to 20 the confirmed number of deaths recorded in the accident that occurred on Sunday morning on the Buipe-Tamale Highway involving three vehicles.

According to eyewitnesses account, Neoplan bus with registration number GW 2659-T tried overtaking a cargo vehicle but collided head-on with an incoming VVIP vehicle with registration number GM 5383-12 from the opposite direction.

Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Yussif Tanko, revealed that the incident occurred at about 1:30 am on Sunday and when his men arrived more than18 were reported to have died and were conveyed in the bucket of a police vehicle to the Tamale Teaching Hospital.

According to him, per preliminary investigations, they found that the driver of a Neoplan bus with 70 passengers on board from Nalerigu to Ejura on reaching a section of the road at Yapei-Yipala on the Tamale-Buipe Highway, was attempting to overtake a cargo car ahead of him in a curve corroborating the eyewitness account.

Meanwhile, relations of the deceased persons have been trooping to the morgue of the facility to identify the victims and to make the necessary arrangements for burial.

Sources at the Tamale Teaching Hospital disclosed that the facility has been overwhelmed by the number of casualties and injuries as a result of the accident.
