Businessman, Edward Asadu has dragged the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako and four others before a Kumasi High Court over the recently held constituency elections.

In a suit sighted by MyNewsGH.com, the plaintiff cites others including the NPP, the Regional Secretary Mr Sam Pyne, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asante Akim North and one Sampson Agyei as the defendants.

The Plaintiff, who was an NPP constituency Chairman aspirant at Asante Akim North according to the suit, is making four claims against the defendants jointly and severally including the following;

  1. A declaration that the Constituency Elections held on the 24th February 2018 which purportedly was organized to elect the Executives of the Asante Akim North Constituency, be declared null, void and of no effect.
  2. An order restraining one Sampson Agyei from holding himself out as Chairman of the said Constituency and also from holding any Constituency Executive Meeting or doing any act in that capacity, until the final determination of the matter.
  3. An order compelling the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Defendants, being the New Patriotic Party, The Ashanti Regional Chairman and the Regional Secretary respectively to re- run the elections to elect Executives of the said Constituency and any other order or orders that the Court may deem fit to make.

According to the Plaintiff, Edward Asadu, he filed to contest for the position of the New Patriotic Party chairmanship in the Asante Akim North Constituency in the Ashanti Region.

He completed all processes required to ensure his eligibility as a candidate adding that the Party ensured that a committee did vet all the aspirants and he the Plaintiff and Sampson Agyei were duly passed and considered eligible to contest.

Meanwhile, tension is said to be brewing within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the area following unresolved issues in relation to the polling station and constituency level elections that nearly turned bloody.

Some members who feel aggrieved over what they termed as the deliberate manipulation of internal elections fear this could cost the party in the 2020 elections and therefore want both the Regional and National hierarchy of the party to, as a matter of urgency, intervene or they are not to be blamed for what may befall the party.

According to the aggrieved members of the party who are threatening to join in the suit, no election can take place in the constituency if due processes were not followed in the election of polling station executives as well as constituency leaders which is said to be heightening the already existing confusion in the area.

They disclosed to MyNewsGH.com’s Ashanti Regional Correspondent that a petition has been dispatch to the Regional and National Secretariat of the party but there appear to be unseen hands manipulating efforts in getting the matter amicably resolved to allow peace to prevail.

A copy of the petition sighted by MyNewsGH.com, also question the rationale behind the unilateral disqualification of Edward Asadu, by the DCE of the area, Francis Oti Boateng, from contesting as Constituency Chairman at the last primaries on the eve of the event.

Supporters of the party argue that events culminating to his disqualification were done in a manner that is alien to the conduct of elections in the party as armed military men were brought to the center and prevented the candidate and his agents from entering the venue.

Violence, it is gathered, nearly broke out at the scene as supporters clashed with the security who said they were acting on orders from above not to allow the candidate to the venue of the elections.

Mr. Asadu, who is said to be a financier of the party at the National down to the constituency level maintains that he is still interested in his bid to become the Chairman.

“For so long as the Asante-Akim North is concerned, we need selfless leaders; hence my decision to contest as Constituency Chairman. The matter has been taken to court and we are waiting for the outcome. I still assume the Constituency elections have not been held”, he disclosed to MyNewsGH.com”

He emphasized that he is bent on leading the party in the area because he wants to use his skills as a businessman to create jobs for the constituents and make them independent when voted for.
