It would be recalled that MyNewsGH.com early last month reported that former Minister for Trade and Industry under the erstwhile John Dramani Mahama administration, Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah had disclosed that he was yet to receive a call from the former president to persuade him to rescind his decision to run for as flagbearer of the party.
We are reliably gathering from the grapevine that Dr Spio-Garbrah is shelving his decision to contest as the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and rather throw his weight behind Mr John Mahama, in order to be considered among the names Mr Mahama will consider for his running mate slot.
Spio-Garbrah who had in an earlier interview said the party’s unity walks are not as unifying as they were intended to be or as they were announced to be, indicated it was one of the reasons he pulled out.
“I have been a vice chairman of the party. When the party wants to undertake an exercise, we sit as a functional executive committee, we sit as a national executive committee and we say, ‘we shall do the following’ and the party will fund it; the party will organize it. Those walks are not currently being organized by the party as NDC.”
But he made a sudden u-turn and was spotted at the climax of all the walks in the Volta Region giving credence to information making the rounds he is strategically positioning himself as a possible running mate for Mr Mahama.
National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kofi Adams disclosed to Accra-based Okay Fm in an interview monitored by MyNewsGH.com that Spio’s presence was an indirect endorsement of the candidature of John Mahama.
“Though I cannot speak for Mr. Ekow Spio Garbrah who was part of the walk last weekend, I can deduce from his speeches that he might be throwing his support behind the former President, and I urge all other aspirants to do same,” he said.
I’m yet to receive a call from Mahama to be his ‘running mate’- Spio-Garbrah
It would be recalled that Spio-Garbrah while granting an interview to Ghanaweb’s Kyenkyenhene Boateng disclosed that no one had approached to lobby for him to rescind his presidential ambition.
According to him, what is making rounds in the grapevine is speculative since the former president himself is yet to call him to make such a proposition to partner him for the 2020 elections.
Responding to a question if he will be prepared to step down and accept to be the running mate to the former President should he officially declare his intention to contest in 2020, the former Trade and Industry Minister said: ’He hasn’t called to say that. You are speculating and we can’t discuss speculative ideas here otherwise we will be tickling ourselves. Let’s wait and cross the bridge when we get to it but at this time and based on the documents in front of you, since 2006 I have made it known to Ghanaians and people all over the world if NDC is looking for a leader, if Ghana is looking for a leader, I am one of many people that they could consider for that leadership”.
He disclosed that delegates of the NDC who will vote for flagbearer should be given a choice since that is the desire of everyone.
“When you go to the supermarket, you do not only see one toothpaste sitting on the shelf and you pick that one. Even if there are seven other toothpaste and that one is the best, the seven will also be there just in case you want your teeth to be brighter, whiter or bad breath or whatever people are looking for…different products offer different solutions”, reiterating that there is the need for delegates to be given the choice.
